Hoffmantown Church Wednesday
Fall Program 2010
Have you been wondering what Life Groups are all about? Perhaps so, as you have picked up the booklet to browse through the various classes that we are offering this Fall semester. Thanks for taking the time to do this and let me share with you briefly the heart behind why we offer and invite you to join in Life Groups.
John records in his Gospel chapter 15 verse 5, “I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.”
Rather humbling isn’t it? Abiding in Him. Resting in Who He is and What He alone is able to do in and through our lives. Paul tells us in Romans 10:17 that “Faith comes from hearing and hearing by the Word of Christ.” How do we abide or rest in Him? How is faith produced and developed in our lives? By spending time with Him in His Word where our minds are renewed and our lives enriched. I want to encourage you to prayerfully consider how the Lord is leading you to spend time with Him in His Word through one of our classes this fall. No matter which class the Lord leads you to participate in, He is the answer. Through His Grace we have the privilege of Surrendering to Him, being Strengthened by Him, and then Serving Him. My prayer for you is that the Lord would meet you in a special way through His Word and that your life would continue to be transformed by Him into His image. Have a great semester.
For His Glory, Pastor Erik
The following classes are offered on Wednesdays this fall starting September 8th at 6:30pm, unless otherwise noted.
Adult Life Groups
1. Basics for Believers with Don Cain * Room B210
God’s word compares our spiritual growth to our physical, from infancy to full maturity. “As newborn babies crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may GROW UP in your salvation.” (1Peter 2:2) We are to “….GROW in our knowledge of God.” (Colossians 1:10) This class is designed for new believers to understand how to grow spiritually and to build their life around the truth of the scriptures. Some topics included in the class are:
What is God’s plan for salvation
How do I know Christ lives in me
How to be assured of eternal life
How do I share my faith with others
How can I continue to grow spiritually
If you feel the need to be established in your faith or to be equipped to help others grow in their faith, this is the class for you. No class on September 15th.
2. Instruments in the Redeemer’s Hands with Barb and Jim Mulvey (12 weeks) * Room B202
Discover where changes are needed in our own lives –not just the lives of others! We might be relieved if God placed sanctification only in the hands of trained professionals, but that is not His plan. Instead, through the ministry of the body, the whole church will mature in Christ. This class is a great reminder that all believers can help one another. Paul Tripp, author of Instruments in the Redeemer’s Hands, reveals how to get to know people and how to lovingly speak truth to them.
Required Resources:
Instruments in the Redeemer’s Hands and workbook Helping Others to Change, both available at the LRC.
3. Precept Class with Susan Franse (13 weeks) * Room B204
2 Timothy – a study on Discipleship. Paul entrusted the Gospel to Timothy and others. Are you guarding the treasure of the Word that has been entrusted to you? By your life? By your word? Even in the midst of persecution?
Required Resources: Precept upon Precept 2 Timothy available at the LRC.
4. Discussion Group on the Faith and Science with Bill McCulloch (9 weeks) * Room B106
The group will discuss issues related to the interaction between a commitment to Jesus Christ as Savior and natural science. We will begin our discussion by referring to articles written by leaders in the field. Facilitators will seek to guide discussion beyond expounding currently held positions to synergistic statements of belief which help Christians understand and communicate our God and our commitment to Him. Suggested out of class reading is likely. This is a great class to help 21st century Christians to: Understand their beliefs with respect to faith and science Communicate those beliefs effectively to both fellow-Christians and non-believers No class on September 15th.
Required Resources: Ass’t articles to be copied 50 pages per student. Originals supplied by teacher. Bible.
5. Missions Facilitator Training with Emray Goossen and BEE World facilitator (10 weeks) * Room B208
This is a participatory class for teaching facilitators. Each class member will be assigned a set of teaching materials the same as is given by Tom Radigan to a foreign pastor as pre-work. Each class member will be given the opportunity to act as a student while someone else is facilitating. Each class member will be asked to be the class facilitator for at minimum of one session. The material will focus on a particular book of the Bible or a specific topic. There are 17 churches to every indigenous pastor in Myanmar. These pastors travel many miles to teach within other villages and yet they do not have the solid teaching basis most of us have. The purpose of this class is to disciple facilitators for the training of others in the foundations of the Gospel. The primary motivation is to advance a facilitating type of teaching skill so that the individual can go to Hoffmantown’s Going Deeper Mission Fields in Myanmar and Uganda to teach indigenous pastors the foundations of the Word (2 Tim 2:2). This is not a lecture, rather a discussion facilitating method of teaching. No class on September 22nd and 29th.
6. Greek for the rest of us with Gil Moreno (12 weeks) * Room B118
We will begin by learning the Greek alphabet followed by an understanding of essential Greek grammar and basic word studies. Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to use Greek in personal Bible study and for lesson preparation in teaching if desired. No previous knowledge of Greek is required. This is a great class to enhance Bible study skills by learning to use New Testament Greek as a study tool and to develop a greater appreciation for God’s word.
Required Resources: Greek for the Rest of Us available at the LRC.
7. Crown – God Provides video series with various leaders of Crown Ministry (8 weeks) * Room B206
The ‘God Provides’ learning experience offers a rich, dramatic journey through six theater-quality, epic short films. These films point out that throughout history, people have wrestled with the concept of trusting God to meet their needs rather than relying on their own efforts, other people, money, or other things society has to offer. This class will show participants through stirring accounts and parables found in the Bible, that God reveals how He wants to be our Provider above anything else.
8. Introductions to Christian and Islamic Worldviews (Gary Hobbs & Bob McClean) (12 weeks)* Room B115
This class is a multimedia presentation on Christian and Islamic worldviews and their differences. The presenter is a devout Christian who has attended a Bible seminary, was taught Islam by several Imans and has lived in Muslim communities for may years. He brings unique knowledge and experience in the Christian and Islamic worldviews. The class will provide an introduction to understanding an individual’s worldview, what it means and what effect it has in daily life. Understanding the differences between a Christian Worldview and Islamic Worldview provides tools and knowledge on how to develop a Godly relationship between Christians and Muslims.
9. Here and Now ð There and Then (Women’s Class) Beth Moore (11 Weeks) * Room B209/221
Beth Moore presents an overview of the book of Revelation in this fascinating video lecture series. As she teaches, Beth presents the varied points of view for the interpretation of the last book of the Bible in laymen’s terms and applications. This study promises to be informative, especially as we see events unfolding in our modern world. Class runs September 8th-November 17th.
